I think that the Meredith Brooks' song, "Bitch," summarizes me rather nicely. Or, if you prefer, X. dell says I'm a life-smart literary scholar with a low BS tolerance...that also works!

The Great Music Award

So, I forgot to mention Ariana's surprise award at award day: the Music award for the second grade. What the hell? When she was awarded it, I was open-mouthed and stunned. Music? Who the hell has music abilities in my family? Well, ok, my brother Mark once played the violin on a concert violinist level, but that's really it for both sides. And Mark doesn't count. There's nothing Mark can't do. It's not fair to put him in the same category as the rest of the family (no, really...president of an oil company with 16 patents to his name...writes lovely poetry...can draw beautifully...plays the violin magnificently...coaches baseball in his free time as he was very good at baseball, football, and track anyway...yeah, he just does it all).

The music teacher made a cryptic comment when Ariana received the award. She said, "For such a happy and smiling girl, she sure can sing the blues!" What the hell?

So, later on, this is what I found out. They had a class one day wherein they were taught all about the blues and heard examples. Then the teacher wanted them to come up with their own. The other eight-year-olds didn't quite get the concept, but MY DAUGHTER did! For some reason, this amused the crap out of me. Let me give you the background on this one. I've had four cats in my life as pets. The first one, Shadow, died long before Ariana was ever born. Scruffy died in 2001, and Hecate died in 2003. We just have Chian, a big, rolly-polly tabby cat with a great personality. He knew I was pregnant before I knew it, and he's better with kids than any dog you can name. So! This was basically her spontaneous song, done to a bluesy rhythm she duplicated from the samples they were given--

We've had four cats
One I never got to even meet
Next one died
Then the other one followed
I only got one left
and I just don't know what I'd do if he went too
If Chian dies
I'm gonna cry!

You might not find this entertaining at all, but damn I laughed. I have no idea why she picked out this topic, but it seemed on target for the expected content!

*****

Please, somebody tell me why I can't get this out of my head...

Ohhhh ohhhh ohhh ice cold milk and an Oreo cookie
They forever go together what a classic combination
When a dark delicious cookie meets an icey cold sensation
Like the one and only creamy crunchy chocolate O-R-E-O

*****

I have a headache. Kids are running all over my house. I need liquor. Please send some ASAP. Thank you.

Okay, we have to get our girls together. TigerGrrl sings the blues. Really: the "Don't Want to Go to Bed Blues", the "Im Mad at the World Blues", and a few others. Maybe we have twins, we just don't know it?

I can so hear the music in her little song. You should check on getting her an instrument of some sort. I love that she chose to write about her cats. It's a great choice because they're very musical animals.

(1) Congratulations to Ariana. Maybe, like Mark, there's nothing she can't do either.

(2) The Oreo song you have in your head is called an earworm. The best thing to get rid of it is to thing of a louder piece of music and consciously think of it, instead.

They're often tunes you don't even like. My last earworm was Britney Spears singing "Oops! I Did It Again."

To combine the two disparate elements of your post, consider the following blues riff (I forget who sings it, I think its Eric Clapton):

"I got them Oreo cookie sandwich, chocolate covered creme filled cookie blues!"

Get the girl some Raybans and a pork pie hat. Hell, throw in a harmonica.

Ever the foreign language teacher: I love the experession earworm and had totally forgotten about it until I saw X-
Dell's comment. But I've only heard it in German. I *think* that's where the original phrase started, but I am not totally sure on that one. Anyway, in German, it's a "ohrwurm."

congratulations to Ariana on her award. Great stuff! How funny that she chose the subject of cats, mentioning one that she never even met before. That's the proof of a good story telly mum from the 'olden' days lol

I still get amazed at the hidden talents my children come out with...the ones I never ever knew they possessed. course the older they get the less those talents appear lol

Thanks, Jaded. Now I have the word 'ohrwurm' repeating endlessly in my head:-)!

I get the blues when I lose an animal friend, too.

Totally appropriate!

Yup, it's official, Ethan and Ari are getting married. =)

I was watching the food network the other day and that pretty Italian lady (Gianna?) made this wonderful drink and I thought of you. It was Limoncello and Champagne mixed together with two fresh raspberries floating in the top of the glass. Maybe sometime you should try that? Or not. Either way I thought of you when she was making it.

Also, yes #6 is about you. So no you're not being egotistical at all!! =)

Jezzy--thanks! She's done a good job this year. I hope she doesn't get bored by next year.

Amanda--thanks to the neighbor (apparently a single father who is oh so happy to have his daughter live with us), our apartment is seldom with the two children it came with. I hadn't thought of that spin on the OREO cookie song, but damnit you're right! LOL I actually just started singing the jingle because my son ate some Oreos in front of me. That's so sad that I haven't sat down and really watched TV in years and I still remember every commercial jingle I ever saw...

FW--haha! We need to get them to do a duet. They can take turns picking the theme!

Angie--yeah, but if I got her an instrument, who is going to teach her how to play? Maybe I just need to exchange editing skills for lessons with a musician :)

X.dell--good point. One of the main reasons why my brother does it all is that my parents always told him that he COULD do anything he wanted. I've done the same type of cheering for my daughter, so who's to say she can't end up like Mark too? The problem with getting replacement music for the OREO song (which is STILL playing in my head, btw) is that any song that has the power to replace it is MORE annoying...haha!

Terry--hey, good suggestion! I should find those lyrics and give them to Ariana to sing for us :)

Lisa--Aren't the hidden talents so much fun to see pop up in your children, though? It's like the secret surprise in the Cracker Jack box! Aw, hell, I'm not even sure if you get Cracker Jack in NZ...hmmm...

Val--yeah, they DO get under one's skin, eh? Because we see them day in and day out, they become part of the family in a lot of ways. I guess folks don't really "get" that unless they've ever had a pet of any sort themselves.

Hoss--thanks! I just hope she continues writing songs :)

Doc-T--now you KNOW when you say that you have something in the lab I might like better, I'm not thinking of anything except...well, very very vulgar and inappropriate things...haha!

Joe--yeah, really, if you have problems grabbing her ass, surely you would have problems licking her too, eh? ;)

April--I used to hate champagne, but now that Alex has turned me on to GOOD champagne, I have problems thinking of drinking it any way but straight! However, that combination sounds good...sort of like a lemon-rasberry mimosa instead of an orange one. And awwww thanks, my official Ego Feeder! I stared at #6 for a while and decided that because it said "wonderful fiance" it might be me...I mean really, who else has a wonderful fiance? haha! The only way, really, to get me to blush and sputter is to compliment me and mean it. You, therefore, have gotten me to do that quite a bit!
