I think that the Meredith Brooks' song, "Bitch," summarizes me rather nicely. Or, if you prefer, X. dell says I'm a life-smart literary scholar with a low BS tolerance...that also works!

Well, That Was Fast!

Thanks to having friends who care about me a LOT and are willing to pester people for me...a LOT...I have....

A JOB!!!!!

Yes, I shall be starting up at Clemson University teaching four classes for the fall, and I will begin next Wednesday.

Note: the job is for more pay for doing less work and actually has health insurance. That's right...for the first time in four years, I shall have health insurance. WOOHOO!

I am thrilled to have you as a colleague! I *think* a new faculty orientation will be taking place on Friday. You may want to check with the dept on that b/c since you have never been an employee or student at Clemson, it'd be really helpful. If you have already missed it, I'll be glad to show you the ropes in Blackboard. Believe me - it is worth it to use that an not have to run any copies. No copies at all!!!!! The students just print it all themselves, and they actually seem to prefer it that way! Anyway, I'll bring copies of syllabi and whatnot to help you get started too. My schedule is so hectic, I may not be around a whole lot after classes get underway, but I'll do what I can to help you now and whatever I can later to help too. =o)

You're going to be so happy to be appreciated by your employer. Of course, do remind me to warn you of the English dept's version of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. If you learn how to navigate through that, you'll be good to go. =o)

Congrats on your appointment. Sounds like you're going to a better school with more interesting students. I'm sure someone at your old school is saying "D'oh!" right about now. But I'm hoping that the Clemson gig might turn into a more permanent appointment.

I just thought of something! If they do your paperwork fast enough, you might be able to get your first paycheck in three weeks. It may even be possible for it to be in a week. Remind me about that tomorrow b/c you'd need to make some phone calls to get that going.

I knew that Satanic voodou ritual I performed would benefit you. Now you must sacrifice a penguin in the name of the Lord Lucifer, or your newfound good fortune will turn to crap. Get cracking.

Now where the hell are you going to find a penguin? I say get some Linnux computer products, download them for free and then delete them. Would that count, Grant?

Anyway, Kira...I am VERY happy for you! I had a feeling that this would be more of an opportunity for you than anything else! ;)

This is like Xmas and my birthday all at once!!! :D

I was so happy when I found out. Thank you guys (gals?) for helping Kira out here!

Funny enough, at the start of summer we were praying for Kira to get the job at Clemson...It didn't turn out the way we expected it, but in the end , all is well.

Kira: This is wonderful news. I'm sorry I didn't respond to the prior post (was off-line dealing with visiting relatives and my sister's operations). Fortunately, I didn't see that until this post, which is great. Health insurance! Good for you. I am so glad. You deserve this.

I begin my load on the 27th--4 classes, 120 something students. But it's great to have a job. Good luck.

I just read one of your comments on Doc T's blog. Did you and Grant and he all meet up? Dog, I'm jealous. So what are they like? Are they funny? Is Grant mean? Or are they shy puppy dogs?

Amanda--licker ready and reporting to duty! :)

Angie--I am not even in the system yet due to them needing my background check back before they can add me in. I can't access blackboard. I was also told that although blackboard was to be used as much as possible (and I'll be happy to do so after I figure out how), that I should copy off the syllabus for them myself and hand that one out. Oh well. Believe me, if I don't get paid until the end of Sept., that was what I thought would happen anyway, and DAMN I'm getting paid a lot more than I thought. I remember what I saw was the amount originally when they were asking to hire, and that amount increased by $3k per year from what I understand!!! Tremendous. I'm so happy!

X.dell--the appointment at Clemson can't be permanent unless I finish up my PhD, which has always been impossible where I live since I can't get a PhD in lit at ANY of the schools within a reasonable drive of my house. Literature's my love. I'd have to switch to education or something to get one around here. CU's rules are that I can teach full-time up to 5 yrs with just a master's. That'll work out fine with me.

NWJR--I've seen bad things happen to good people too, but I'm just glad that today was not my day. Haha! Still, yes, I'm hoping that I continue to have good karma through positive actions with other people. Regardless of how the universe treats me for that, I myself will feel a lot better knowing I'm doing the right thing.

Grant--where the hell am I going to find a penguin? Why couldn't you have made it a squirrel, racoon, possum, wild turkey, deer, or dove? THOSE I can get around here aplenty!

Laura--thanks! So far I'm still in shock. I can't believe my good fortune, and working for CU seems like it's going to be a great thing.

Alex--I didn't get the job at the beginning of the summer because then I'd have had regrets about leaving Tech, feeling like I abandoned the students "just" for money and benefits. This way, I leave without any guilt. It had to happen like this for me to see what reality was.

Tony--no, not unless you're going to be robbing the banks FOR me ;)

Mandy--yes, yes I do! I seriously doubt I'd have this job at Clemson if it weren't for the friends I have. It's yet another reason why I always tell my daughter that good friends are more important than just about anything else.

FW--thanks! I am VERY MUCH looking forward to having health insurance. After four years of no health insurance, I have a looong list of minor annoyances that I put off getting looked at for monetary reasons. That alone is worth the change of job scenery.

SC--thanks :)

EOTR--in answer to your question a couple of days ago about class size, I ran across something in one of my papers that stated that the typical English 103 class (of which I am teaching four) has 19 students in it. ONLY 19???? WOW! I'm more used to the 23 to 29 range for the classes I've taught in the past. And yes, I met Doc-T, Grant, and Angie down in Atlanta with Alex in the end of July. Doc-T is just as funny in person as online. Angie is very easy to talk to, personable, and fun. Grant I simply adore. Yes, he DOES have the potential to pick up an uzi and level a building, but that's part of his charm. Haha! Seriously, Grant's just wonderful. I can talk to him one-on-one for hours easily.

Val--you'd THINK that I hardly had time to be upset by it, but trust me...I did...haha! Seriously, though, you're right. It resolved itself before I could get fully out of shock, which means that other than not wanting to eat and staring at the walls a bit, I was ok.

Fatty--thanks! After wandering around campus yesterday, I really think this will be a great job.

Jezzy--absolutely. The quickness of how fast this was "fixed" saved me from losing a few years off my life. I still don't know if I'll think it's real until I get an actual paycheck. Haha!

JD--thank you :)

Angie--yeah, about that one...you wouldn't HAPPEN to have a penguin around your house I could "borrow," would you?

Doc-t--not in THIS household it can't be. I require four hours out of Alex for it to count. Pity him.

EM--hurrah indeed! Life is truly looking up.
